Els Quatre Gats is a modernist cafe/restaurant/bar tucked away down a little side street (Montsio, 3 bis) just off the main shopping walkway at Avda Portal d' Angel in the Barri Gotic. This cafe/restaurant was a popular haunt for the young Picasso in the early 1900's and here he undertook his very first commissioned work for designing the front cover of the menu.
Stepping into the restaurant felt like we were stepping back in time. The interior of the cafe was lit with antique chandeliers that gave the feeling of what it must have been like in an old Tavern back at the turn of the last century. Paintings filled much of the wall space and colourful multicoloured tiles decorated the central Bar.

A new tapas bar has opened in Barcelona. Cachitos is the name and it opens its doors in the plain center of Barcelona to attract a clientele who loves tapas, but in a cool environment and design. Cachitos is a perfect combination of tapas and drinks, which is ideal to enjoy at any time of day, e.g. for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The decor, by Estrella Salietti and Futur2 is one of the strengths of place, surprising with such a mix of furniture and the amount of space and very distinct areas that create the feeling of being in different restaurants at the same time. And although there is no doubt that the food is the main protagonist, Cachitos also pays special attention to the sangria, which is uplifted here to premium beverage category, in a menu offering up to 50 varieties.

First you’ll recognise the beautiful green decor from the outside, complete with a vintage lamp above the door and plants attached to the other doors. One step inside and you will immediately feel in love with the atmosphere and their decor. A brick wall on one end, Parisian metrotiles on the other. Old school chairs mix well with the modern tables. There’s one large table perfect for a group of friends, but you can easily visit this café on your own. Read the Spanish papers (and their magazines on Saturday) and log in on their wifi network. We’ve only ordered something to drink, but we saw others receiving delicious looking sandwiches. Downstairs you’ll find space for exhibitions (but it wasn’t finished yet, because Taranná only opened last month) The area is getting better by the day. Federal Café is one cross road further and Tickets is also nearby.

The Dalmau brothers, Custo and David, created Custo Barcelona in the early 80’s after a long trip during which they travelled all around the world. Their journey allowed them to discover not only new landscapes but the most varied of artistic, cultural and philosophical expressions.
Amongst the things they found to be most worthy of interest were the typically Californian style they saw on the surfers who lived in the southern part of the state and the psychedelic look they observed in the northern part. The brothers were impressed by the colorful and innovative fashion trends they came across, and in particular the style of the tops and T-shirts which didn’t exist in Spain in those days.
Using the above as a starting point, the brand was launched under the name “Custo Line”.
The Dalmau brothers got to work and learned everything there was to know about printing techniques and finishings, paying special attention to graphic design, a field they felt particularly comfortable with. Through time, their research on the use of color and prints has given risen rise to designs that are innovative, bold and sophisticated.
Later on, all kinds of new garments were introduced to complement Custo Barcelona’s trademark printed tops, like skirts, trousers and coats, thus giving rise to complete collections.
Nowadays it could be said that Custo Barcelona is a style in itself; one that, to a certain extent, embodies a specific lifestyle.

Freya is a store located right by Placa de la Virreina. It almost looks like a candy store with its enormous choice of artistically ornamented rings, necklaces and bracelets in every color imaginable. The owner, Teresa, is a charming woman. With her flaming red mane, she looks like one of the artists that she seeks out to produce all the jewelry for her little shop. She finds everything with local artists, it’s a young style and it’s not very expensive. A silver chain with a big red faceted stone is 18 Euros.

This was his last private commission before he devoted himself to religious projects. Gaudí was free to design this corner block of apartments the way he wanted. His goal was to create a completely new form of housing. The ideas for it developed out of the ideas of the Casa Battló, but go even further in exaggeration and distortion. With this building Gaudí shows to be a genius of great intelligence and with an enormous creativity. La Pedrera is the architectural demonstration of his interpretation of nature : the massive blocks of stone of the façade recall the mountains, the curves of the façade reflect the sea, and the ironworks represent plants and flowers.

It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration. The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people. The seating is below the Forum Plaza level. The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars. From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended. The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m2.
